NEWS FROM LIGNIERES

Warm congratulations to Madame Solange Soulat who has been elected president of the Comite de Jumelage. The Soulat family has spent many happy holidays over the years with Barbara and Jim Wylie and family. Solange is enthusiastic about her new position. We look forward to hearing of the new committee's plans for the future.

Chris and Mark McArthur write…… Our holiday   trip to visit friends ended up being like a Twinning reunion!!!

We didn't deliberately set out to see any of the many acquaintances we've met as a result of twinning but over the period of 5 days managed to see just about everyone we had ever met !

The hospitality shown by them all was, as always, exceptional. They really make you feel welcome and I was really becoming accustomed to champagne receptions and aperitifs !!!!

In an effort to resurrect and encourage school exchanges, I met with the principal English teacher at Lignieries college and was very encouraged by his desire to also see this become a reality again. With this goal in mind a few of the Dunbar committee will visit the grammar school soon after term restarts to meet with the appropriate teachers and see what we can all do to assist with this. Fingers crossed we may see an exchange next year.

On a more social note, we were delighted to meet up with Donald and Wilma Brennan, ex twinning members who moved to Lignieries when they both took retirement.

They have a lovely house with a huge garden just on the outskirts of the town. They (as well as their dog) seem to have settled well into the French way of life and looked very fit and healthy.

As always, the time was too short and there are just too many friends to try and see but, as always, we loved every minute of it and are looking forward to the next visit.

If you have never been to Lignieries, I thoroughly recommend it and can guarantee you'd get no better welcome anywhere.

Joy writes …..Happy news from Marie (ne Cornu) and Sebastian Pulverin. Birth of their son Nathan. Born on the 21 st of May this year. Weighing in at over 3 Kg. Marie and Sebastien enjoy keeping in touch with Dunbar . They have visited Dunbar as a couple and Marie enjoyed many visits to Dunbar as a student. Marie is now a qualified teacher of English.

Donald and Wilma Brennan are now settled in and enjoying the French version of the “Good Life”. They have bought a lovely house with a large garden on the outskirts of Lignieres. They both look very well and relaxed and enjoy the slow pace of life. Richard and I stayed with them for a night in early July. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and were treated to a lovely meal complete with home grown vegetables.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

CHEESE AND WINE EVENING : 21st June. Members and friends enjoyed a relaxed get-together in the Day Centre. There was an opportunity to view the new CD created by Hilda Laurenson and friends, which celebrates the first ten years of our twinning agreement with Lignieres. Thanks to Joy for organising the cheese and wine.

CIVIC WEEK QUIZ NIGHT: 23 rd June. A team of members and friends didn't come near winning but enjoyed this popular event. We went home having found out the meanings of porbeagles and paradiddles!

RNLI FETE : Saturday 9 th July. Thanks to Jenny and Peter, Sandra and Moyra and Rob Wright for manning our stall and supporting the RNLI.

BASTILLE NIGHT: 14 th July. This was a fine evening on which 2 teams of 5 people comprising members, friends and relations were able to enjoy a few games of petanque at Hallhill. We were happy to welcome Alan Harrower, an experienced player from Inverleith club, who was able to give us a few tips. He also had a little widget for keeping the score - which will be on our shopping list the next time we're in France !
